Gabus Automotive Group Gives $25,200 to UFP!

gabus gift

Due to a drastic increase in the amount of families needing to use our food pantry, we had to scale back on the amount of personal care items given to our clients during the past year. Through the generosity of the Gabus Cares Foundation, we will be able to return to giving our clients shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toilet paper, soap, laundry detergent, and diapers each month.

Providing families with a personal care items helps them use their limited resources to pay for food, shelter, or clothing. Personal care items cannot be purchased with SNAP (previously known as food stamps), yet they are of vital importance for the continued health of our community members. Forty percent of Urbandale Food Pantry clients are under the age of 18 and personal care items are essential for children to grow into healthy, contributing members of our community. This grant will greatly help our neighbors in need in the upcoming year!

Gabus Cares July Charitable Program Benefits the UFP

Gene Gabus, president of Gabus Automotive Group, believes strongly in giving back to the communities where his employees and customers live and work. His father, the late Charles Gabus who founded the family of car dealerships, quietly supported many area charities. Gene Gabus continues the "give back" philosophy his father modeled. The Gabus Cares program honors and supports local charitable organizations that help lift individuals — inspiring hope and providing much-needed resources.

During the month of July, when customers buy a new or used vehicle from any of the Gabus Automotive Group dealerships, Gabus Automotive Group will donate $100 per car sold to local charities.

This year, Gabus Cares program proceeds will benefit four local charities selected by the employees at the four Gabus Automotive Group dealerships. From a pool of 45 nominated organizations, employees voted to support these four local charities:

  • Children's Cancer Connection
  • Prevent Child Abuse Iowa
  • Puppy Jake Foundation
  • Urbandale Food Pantry

Gabus Automotive Group July charitable programs have raised nearly $500,000 since the Gabus Cares program was established in 2011. Gabus says, "Our goal is to give more than $100,000 this year. Sharing our good fortune with the folks that place their trust in us as a local business is simply a wonderful way to show gratitude and help our communities."

stand up against hunger

About 130 people gathered at the Funny Bone Comedy Club on April 13 to raise funds for the Urbandale Food Pantry and enjoy the stand-up comedy of Willie Farrell and Dwayne Clark. Farrell, Clark, and the Funny Bone generously donated time, space, and talent for the event, so all of the ticket sales went to the UFP. Thanks to the Funny Bone, Willie Farrell, Dwayne Clark, and all of those who came out and supported the Pantry!

Number of Families Served Keeps Climbing

In 2014, the average number of families accessing help each month from the Urbandale Food Pantry grew to 413. In our busiest month (November) we served 505 families!—that marked the first time we had more than 500 families in one month.

We are thankful for all of the support we receive from the community to keep this vital service going. We hope you will keep the UFP in mind in your 2015 charitable giving. Together we can make a difference in the lives of our neighbors in need.
