Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the UFP’s mission?
A. The UFP is a collaborative community effort to reach out to our neighbors to provide food assistance with dignity and compassion.
Q. How is the UFP associated with the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC)?
A. The UFP is one of 14 DMARC food pantries in the metro area. People can use one DMARC pantry once per calendar month to receive a three-day supply of food.
Q. What types of food are included in a DMARC food bag at the UFP?
A: A DMARC food bag consists of fresh and canned fruits and vegetables, spaghetti sauce, tomatoes, beans, tuna, chicken, pasta, rice, cereal, and misc. items. In addition to the DMARC food bag, the UFP also provides personal care items and gallons of milk.
Q. Is there additional food available?
A. Yes. Bread and fresh produce (when available) are provided on a daily basis.
Q. What does a person need to get food from the UFP?
A: Clients need to bring a current photo ID for everyone in the family age 18 and over, and some sort of ID (Social Security card, school ID, insurance card, etc.) for family members under the age of 18. No ID is needed to receive daily over-the-counter food.
Q. If someone qualifies for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly the Food Stamp Program), can they still use the UFP?
A. Yes.
Q. How can a person make sure the food they receive is fresh and safe?
A. DMARC food pantries follow the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act. The UFP only provides unopen/non-expired food items, and fresh produce in the DMARC food bag. Slightly expired food items are provided over-the-counter. Clients use their own discretion in taking these food items.
Q. Does a person need to show proof of income to use the UFP?
A: No. If you need food, we are here to help.
Q. Does the UFP share clients’ information with anyone else?
A. Personal Client Information is subject to strict confidentiality guidelines and all DMARC/NIFCAP certified individuals have agreed to these confidentiality standards. A copy of our Privacy Policy is available at all pantry sites.
